Technique, Invention and Performance

With Dance Exchange company members and Gerri Houlihan, Guest Artist

The Dance Exchange is excited to welcome Gerri Houlihan in co-teaching this institute. A long standing faculty at the American Dance Festival, Gerri founded the highly celebrated Boston Dance Project, and was a founding faculty member at Miami’s New World School for the Arts.  Gerri and the Dance Exchange share an enthusiasm for developing an energetic, creative, and community-minded atmosphere. The institute is designed to be physically engaging and welcoming for dancers of all levels.  It includes a daily technique class that draws on both ballet and modern styles and extended lab time developing new work through Dance Exchange tools and methodology.  The week will end with an informal performance of solo and group works.  We will leave with a renewed sense of what draws us to dance – as professionals, students, or committed devotees who dance among a multitude of other endeavors.

June 18–22

9:00 – 5:30 daily | tuition $400

Dance, Still: An Institute for People Over Fifty

With Dance Exchange company members

This institute is for anyone who used to dance, anyone who never danced – and everyone who wants to dance.  The days begin with a warm-up geared to different levels and progress into exploration and movement.  As with most Dance Exchange institutes, we will incorporate tools and methodology to get moving, create comfort and community and find our sense of joy and energy - but our time will also be spent exploring the various facets of bringing ourselves to dance at this age.  Do we find freedom? Limitations? Expectations? Surprises?  What can dance teach us for other parts of our lives at this stage?  We will use these and other questions to guide us as we spend the week dancing, still.

June 25–29

9:00 – 5:30 daily | tuition $400

Generating and Crafting Dances

With Dance Exchange company members

This institute will provide multiple ways of approaching composition, concepts and content. We spark inspiration, move beyond traditional tools and learn to form, structure and edit using Dance Exchange methods.  Bring your own ideas or work in the context of current Dance Exchange projects to discover how subject matter can offer both a guide and goal to help make your dance YOUR dance.

July 13-19

9:00 – 5:30 daily | tuition $350

The Teen Exchange RISK PROJECT

With Elizabeth Johnson and Dance Exchange company members

Ever skydive? Called your crush on the phone? Do you speak your mind even when it’s not what others want to hear?

Can you be true to yourself if you are afraid to take a risk?  The RISK PROJECT was designed by members of the Dance Exchange’s Teen Exchange program to explore these kinds of questions and to understand where, how, and why we take risks in our lives.  Teens from around the country will gather at the Dance Exchange studios this summer to explore and reflect on risk using dance, text, and visual arts. The week will culminate in a multi-disciplinary public performance.
