Liz Lerman Receives

2002 MacArthur Fellowship

Takoma Park, MD: Liz Lerman, founder and artistic director of the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, has been named a 2002 MacArthur Fellow by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The annual MacArthur "genius awards" carry a $500,000 stipend over five years for each recipient in recognition and support of their creative accomplishment.

Ms. Lerman, who is known for her pioneering work in choreography and community-building, was one of 24 recipients this year. Each has done significant work in the arts, sciences or academia.

Jonathan F. Fanton, President of the MacArthur Foundation, says, "In all our programs, we are committed to nurturing those who are a source of new knowledge and ideas, have the courage to challenge inherited orthodoxies and to take intellectual, scientific, and cultural risks. For over two decades, the MacArthur Fellows Program has been a vital part of the Foundation's efforts to recognize and support individuals who lift our spirits, illuminate human potential, and shape our collective future."

Ms. Lerman is a gifted teacher, choreographer and performer whose work has redefined where dance takes place and who can dance. Her commitment is both to the art of dance and to the human element in art-making. In her work, she builds community, encourages personal insight, and choreographs dances that have been called visionary, profound and revelatory. Her company includes men and women ranging in age from the 20s through the 60s, each of whom is fully immersed in all aspects of creation, performance and teaching. In towns and cities throughout the country, her workshops have inspired local people--from shipyard workers to clerics--to participate in shaping and performing new work.

Ms. Lerman believe the award will allow her to explore even more new ideas and approaches. "I'm resolved that this incredible gift make me more bold, not less bold, in the future," she says.
