Maryland Systema: Practical Self-Defense for Adults
Maryland Systema offers practical self-defense training for adults of all experience and fitness levels. Classes focus on breathing, movement, balance, awareness, controlled contact, and staying calm under pressure. Training includes work with grabs, strikes, close contact, ground movement, and changing situations, with an emphasis on practical skills rather than competition or memorized routines.
Participants can expect a practical, hands-on class taught at a pace that allows them to learn safely and ask questions. Training includes breathing, movement, balance, awareness, partner exercises, controlled contact, and ways to respond when distance or pressure changes.
Exercises are adjusted for different experience levels and physical abilities. Beginners do not need previous martial arts experience, special equipment, or a high level of fitness to participate.
What participants should know:
Classes are open to adults age 18 and older.
Beginners are welcome, and no previous martial arts experience is required.
Participants should arrive a few minutes early and let the instructor know about any injuries, movement limitations, or other concerns that may affect their training.
All exercises can be adjusted to help participants work at a safe and manageable pace.
What participants should bring or wear:
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Shoes are not permitted in the studio, so participants train barefoot or in socks. No uniform or specialized equipment is required.
