Join us as we celebrate Martha Wittman, this year’s Catalyst Awardee. With a remarkable 70-year career spanning performance, choreography, and teaching, Martha’s journey bridges some of the most influential lineages in modern dance—from her early years with the Juilliard Dance Theatre under Doris Humphrey to her 30-year collaboration with Liz Lerman and Dance Exchange. Along the way, she has contributed as a performer, choreographer, and educator in countless contexts, including her work with Dances We Dance Co. and her teaching at institutions such as Bennington College, Ohio State University, and Indiana University.

A recipient of NEA and Maryland State Arts Council grants, the Doris Humphrey Fellowship from the American Dance Festival, and Dance/USA’s College Choreography Award, Martha has long been recognized for her contributions to the field. More than accolades, however, it is her presence that defines her impact.

Martha describes herself as a “bridge person” across generations—and this is exactly how she has lived her life in dance. Through her steady presence as a teacher, her depth as a performer and dancemaker, and her commitment to the creative lives of others, she has shaped not only the field, but also the many individuals who have had the opportunity to learn, dance, and grow with her.

Today, Martha continues to create, write, and engage in community, including her participation in Liz Lerman’s Wicked Bodies. Her enduring curiosity and generosity of spirit embody what it means to be a catalyst—someone who sparks transformation, connection, and possibility.
